Sudan’s army says it has regained control of Kur Hassan in Blue Nile state after fierce fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The clashes are part of a wider battle for control of one of Sudan’s most resource-rich regions. Blue Nile state contains vast agricultural land producing cotton, sesame and gum arabic, along with gold, copper and iron deposits concentrated in the south and southeast where fighting is intensifying.
The region is also home to the strategic Roseires Dam, a key hydroelectric facility on the Blue Nile. Sudan has accused Ethiopia of supporting RSF operations in the area, claims Addis Ababa denies.
Local leaders say the conflict is unlike previous wars fought in the region and warn that control over border zones and mineral resources could shape the wider course of Sudan’s civil war.
