Two explosions in Damascus injured at least 18 people near Emmanuel Macron’s hotel minutes after his convoy left, during a landmark visit. Macron met transitional president Ahmed Al Sharaa in the first European head of state visit since the 2024 fall of the Assad regime, as French business leaders signed reconstruction deals. France returned artefacts borrowed in 2010 and pledged to repatriate over $57m confiscated from an Assad family member, amid concerns over financing and banking constraints.
Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto reports from Damascus, Syria.
