Trump Proposes Coalition to Secure Strait of Hormuz

U.S. President Donald Trump says the United States is working with Israel and potentially several allies to secure the strategic Strait of Hormuz as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump suggested forming an international coalition to protect shipping routes through the narrow waterway — where roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes each day.

The U.S. president argued that countries that rely heavily on Gulf oil, including European nations and China, should help secure the route with military support such as minesweepers, troops and special forces.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials say the Strait of Hormuz is not completely closed, but under what they describe as “smart control.” According to Iran, ships from neutral or friendly countries can pass, while vessels linked to the U.S. or Israel could face restrictions.

At the same time, diplomatic efforts are underway. Emmanuel Macron spoke with Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian urging de-escalation after attacks on infrastructure across the Gulf region.

Analysts warn the conflict could turn into a war of attrition, potentially dragging out the crisis and increasing risks for global energy markets.
