United States President Donald Trump has held talks with Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, at the White House as the Treasury Department announced suspending sanctions against Damascus for a further six months.
The meeting on Monday capped a stunning year for al-Sharaa, a 43-year-old former al-Qaeda commander who toppled the longtime autocratic leader of Syria, Bashar al-Assad last December.
Al Jazeera’s White House Correspondent Kimberly Halkett reports from Washington DC.
