US President Donald Trump has claimed on social media that Iran has asked for a ceasefire, stating that Washington will consider it only when the Strait of Hormuz is “open, free and clear”.
Until then, he warned that US forces are “blasting Iran into oblivion” and “back to the Stone Ages”.
Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reported from the White House that the language from the administration has shifted, with Trump describing Iran’s new government as “less radicalised and far more intelligent” — a departure from earlier characterisations of Tehran as “evil” and “monsters”.
Fisher noted that while the US has achieved significant military objectives, including destroying Iran’s navy and damaging its missile and drone programmes, regime change has not been delivered.
He suggested the softened language may be an attempt to frame the current leadership as a new, more palatable entity, though there is no indication that Tehran’s approach to the US has fundamentally changed.
