The Meningitis B vaccine will be offered to some students at the University of Kent in a “targeted” programme to tackle a deadly outbreak, UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said.
Two young people have died in the outbreak, and two more cases have been identified. Four of the 15 confirmed cases are Meningitis B, known as MenB.
Streeting also said general eligibility for the MenB vaccine will be re-examined. Routine MenB vaccination was rolled out in 2015, which means older teens have not been covered; though it is available privately
Earlier, the UKHSA defended the speed of its response to the “unusual” outbreak, and said there’s no evidence the bacterial infection has spread beyond Kent.
