Syrian families queue for news on relatives held at former SDF prison in Raqqa

In Raqqa, Syria’s new authorities face mounting pressure to account for thousands of detainees still held in the city’s main prison after the Syrian Army took control from the Kurdish-led SDF. Families gather daily outside the old courthouse, desperate for information about relatives detained, sometimes on accusations as minor as complaining about bread prices during ISIL rule.
Syria’s Interior Ministry says it is reviewing case files to distinguish the innocent from those guilty of serious crimes, but many families accuse officials of withholding information and demand immediate releases, particularly of children. After years under ISIL and then SDF control, patience in Raqqa is wearing thin.

Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Raqqa, northern Syria.
