Aaron David Miller, a former US Middle East negotiator and analyst, told Al Jazeera from Washington DC that US diplomacy has never applied democracy and human rights consistently.
He said that despite Donald Trump overturning many diplomatic norms, US alliances have not weakened and global leaders still seek engagement with Washington.
Miller noted that Middle Eastern leaders, including Israel’s partners, have imposed no real costs on the US or Israel over Gaza.
He dismissed claims of Trump-brokered peace deals, saying Iran saw only a temporary halt in fighting without diplomacy.
On Gaza, he said phase one of the ceasefire is in place but moving to phase two will be extremely difficult.
Miller warned Trump is overseeing an unprecedented expansion of presidential power that is undermining US democratic norms.
On Venezuela, he said Trump has left himself little room but to force Nicolás Maduro from power, risking US credibility if he fails.
