Reports indicate an exchange of fire between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in the southern Gazan city of Rafah, near the border with Egypt.
The incident, which began with gunfire, escalated into Israeli artillery shelling. Explosions were reportedly heard across Rafah and in eastern Khan Younis.
Palestinian sources report one Israeli soldier was wounded in the clash.
The outbreak of violence has sparked fear and frustration among Palestinians in Rafah, who warn this could signal a collapse of the truce and a return to intensive Israeli bombardment.
